Bihar has become a dry state. The state govt. imposed total prohibition on the sale and consumption of liquor (both Indian-Made Foreign Liquor and country made). The prohibition comes into force from April 1, 2016.

The govt. said it had received tremendous support from people particularly women and children. Alcohol prohibition was also an electoral promise made by the incumbent govt.

No new liquor licences will be issued. However, the army cantonment areas would be exempt as they regulate sale and consumption of alcohol in their own way.

The liquor manufacturers and companies will be allowed to manufacture alcohol but they cannot trade within the state.

Alcohol prohibition in India is in force in the states of Bihar, Gujarat, Nagaland, parts of Manipur and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Kerala has been implementing prohibition in a phased manner since 2014.
