A new drug for drug-resistant TB named Bedaquiline has been launched by the Health Minister, J.P. Nadda as a part of national program.

The drug is a diarylquinoline that targets specifically Mycobacterial ATP synthase, an enzyme essential for supply of energy to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and most other mycobacteria which cause tuberculosis.

It is introduced in 104 districts across 5 states.

Background:

Multi drug resistant TB is an extreme and fatal form of of TB in which the medicines used in normal course of TB become ineffective. The multidrug resistant form has arisen due to non compliance by patients and rampant misuse of antibiotics which makes the bacteria resistant to these medicines.

24 March is World TB day.
