SYL is a proposed 214-kilometer canal linking river Satluj to river Yamuna. The canal was to be built to share waters of Satluj with Haryana. The construction of the canal was stopped in Punjab.

In 2004, the then chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh in the Punjab assembly passed the controversial Punjab Termination  of water Agreement Act 2004. It annulled the water sharing agreement. The Act was challenged by Haryana govt. in the SC.

Recently, the present Punjab govt. has passed the law to denotify the land acquired earlier for constructing SYL canal.
